Family snacks have taken over our household right now, as we are staying “safer at home”.
This quarantine has all of us feeling kind of restless.
To combat this restlessness, I’ve decided to focus on family snacks.
Here are some of my favorites:
CUT OUT COOKIES
I love cute cookie cutters!
There is just something about rolling out the dough, using cookie cutters and lots of frosting and icing that brings me joy.
POPCORN
We’ve been having fun popping our own popcorn, using our old-fashioned popcorn popper.
That popping sound brings back so many memories from my childhood.
We’ve been experimenting with different seasonings on our popcorn.
In addition to our typical butter, salt, and pepper, we’ve tried adding some different seasonings.
Our favorites so far have been: ranch, chili lime, garlic parmesan, and cinnamon sugar.
The ones that haven’t gone over so well(despite my children’s insistence that they would) have been: chocolate and strawberry syrup, shredded cheese, and caramel ice cream topping.
Popping up some popcorn, adding some fun seasoning and cozying up to watch an old movie seems to be our ending to most every evening.
DEVILED EGGS
I’ve always loved deviled eggs, so I find any and every excuse to make these.
Quarantined….here, how about some deviled eggs?
I’ve had fun experimenting with adding a few new “secrets” to mine to see how they’d go over.
No one has complained yet. I’ve added chili lime(can you tell it’s my current obsession?), chopped pickles, turmeric, and tarragon.
NO BAKE COOKIES
I found this recipe on Facebook, and it looked and sounded so simple that my son decided to whip them together.
Wow, were they good! And simple.
Definitely a win-win in my book.
Here’s the recipe just in case you want to try them.
Ingredients
3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
2 cups white sugar
½ cup milk
½ cup butter
3 cups quick-cooking oats
½ cup crunchy peanut butter
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
Directions
Step 1
Heat cocoa, sugar, milk, and butter over medium heat. Boil these VERY slowly (they will turn out better) when they reach the boiling point, boil them for no longer than 90-120 seconds.
Step 2
Stir together oats, peanut butter and vanilla with a big wooden spoon. Pour the hot mix over the oatmeal mix and drop on wax paper.
PIZZAS
Pizza is definitely my favorite food, so even though this post is about snacks, I just had to include pizza here.
So lately, everytime anyone asks “what’s for lunch?”
I respond with “PIZZA and YOU get to choose what kind to make.”
I stocked up on cheeses and pizza crusts and random ingredients.
My older children have been fancy and made pesto sauce with fresh mozzarella, basil, and tomato pizzas.
My youngest has been more traditional and made cheese and cheese and pepperoni pizzas.
Some of the others we’ve had: alfredo sauce with grilled chicken, BLT pizza, taco pizza(with taco meat and doritos), grilled mushroom blitz, and chicken, bacon and ranch.
Snacks has been such a staple for us through this quarantine.
My favorite part of these snacks is that the whole family has been involved.
My adult children, my teens, and my youngest.
Family snacks seem to draw us all together and make our “forced” family time even more special.
The memories we are making during this difficult time are priceless(I wish these grocery bills were too).
What are some of your favorite snacks that involve the whole family coming together?
