When people think of fall activities, it often focuses on children’s activities. Fall always feels like a season of change to me. Time to set new goals, priorities and commitments. This is a great time to explore so many different activities for your older child(ren) too! Even my high schoolers always seem energized and excited by this new season. Here are some ideas for autumn fun for all ages.
Some great ways to plan some autumn fun adventures with all ages:
- Photography. What a great time to capture some amazing landscapes. Get a book about or research some photo taking tips. Then think of a photo-inspiring place and go practice these new techniques. Be sure to join in! Maybe make enlargements of your favorite picture or 2 and hang them up.
- Scarecrow Contest. Scarecrows look so festive this time of year. The ones sold in stores can also cost quite a bit! Why not make a frame for each person, gather together a box of old clothes(either from your drawers, attic, or thrift store), get a bale of hay, some hats, etc and set a timer? Or, alternatively, give each person(or team) a certain amount of money, let them spend it on supplies for their scarecrow and get to work!
- A pie bake off. Each person has to make a pie from scratch. You decide if it has to be a certain kind(pumpkin, apple, etc) or if they can choose the kind. Possibly even invite family members or friends over for the tasting portion!
- Outdoor exercise. Going for a hike, jog, or run in a new scenic area is always fun. Raking and jumping in leaves or heading to an orchard to pick some apples.
- An apple day. Grab a bushel or 2 of apples. Challenge them to find a recipe or 2 to try. Think of someone that you could bless by sharing something you’ve made with.
- Camping. Let them plan the trip, from the location to the food to the sleeping arrangements to the activities. Don’t forget to bring the s’mores supplies!
- Music. Think campfire songs! Maybe your child wants to write one(or 20), or maybe they’ve been learning guitar and they can practice outside around a campfire.
- Sewing. This is a perfect time to put those skills to good use! You could agree on a them and they could make “family costumes”, or perhaps could try selling some that he/she has made.
- Creative writing: Outdoor locations can be the perfect inspiration for a new story or poem! You could choose a very scenic location and challenge your child to use it as the setting for a story or poem. Don’t be afraid to try your own hand at it! Writing can be a great way to release your thoughts and creativity.
- Painting: This is truly a perfect time to paint some landscapes or local scenery. Once again, don’t be afraid to join in, even if it’s not your thing. This is a time in their lives where it’s really important to encourage them that it’s never too late to try something new!
Fall really is a fabulous time of year to try something new with your older child(ren). This time of new beginnings and goals is a great time to start exploring new activities as a family. So many of these activities will be enjoyable for your whole family. I hope you are able to enjoy some of these ideas for autumn fun for all ages.
